In my Instagram stories last week (follow me here!), I showed a sneak peak at my new command center set up! Since we’re in the midst of finishing it up, I thought I would share some inspiration for the space.
First though – why am I creating a command center and where?
The room below is our breakfast nook and the hallway out of the breakfast nook leads to our laundry/mud room and garage. On the wall between the laundry room and garage door, we had a sign and some hooks for keys. But, it didn’t really fill up the space. We have a lot of empty walls and they are starting to eat at me!
Right now, I’m in the process of shifting around some furniture and decor in our house to make better use of our rooms (like this breakfast nook that has been basically a wasted sitting room for 1+ years). You may have seen on Instagram as well that I am converting my office to a playroom (more coming on that!). I had some organizational items – a mail sorter and calendar – in my office that now need a new home. Hence, the idea to make a command center in the back entryway as born!
Inspiration Pictures
Before I start a project, I like to find and save inspiration pictures [saving them makes it so much easier to refer back to!] I personally search on Instagram, Pinterest, and LikeToKnow.it. I just recently added LikeToKnow.it to my searches, and it’s great because you can get direct product links. Pinterest has been my go-to for home decor for a long time, but it gets frustrating when you find a beautiful picture that links to some spammy site or ad.
Command Center Elements
Based on my inspiration pictures and items I already had, these are the elements I plan to put in my command center for organization purposes:
- Mail Sorter
- Key Hooks
- Paper Roll Holder
- Calendar
- Basket/Jar for Pens
Mix It Up
However, as you can see from my inspiration pictures, the way to jazz a command center up and really make it fit a space is to add decor pieces in. I love the idea of adding a mix of signs, quotes, letters, and accent items. These are the items I plan to put in my command center:
- Letterboard
- “B” letter [for our last name]
- Family Name Sign we received when we got married
- Pineapple [because I just love pineapples – check out my entire Friday Finds dedicated to pineapples here]
- Welcome arrow
Cohesive Style
The last consideration for my command center design is to make sure that all the pieces stay cohesive and true to a similar style. That doesn’t mean they all have to be the same, but I like to use neutral tones and just a few particular elements.
For example, in the last inspiration picture from Nina Williams Blog, she has 3 main elements which she repeats across pieces: black/chalkboard, wood tones, and galvanized metal.
My command center will incorporate black, gold, and light wood tones. Check back next week for the full reveal!
