Ok, ok I am OBSESSED with how these designs came out! I kind of want to build a new house just so I can use them! I’ve created an overall scheme for this modern traditional whole house design and then individual room designs from there.
FYI – This is a LONG post. I’ve included design boards for an entire 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom house with office and loft.

Overall Scheme
For a whole house design, I like to start with an overall scheme to make sure everything coordinates and flows throughout the house for cohesion. I include bigger items on this board, like paint colors, wallpaper, tile, rugs, and lighting. For this design, here are the paint colors I have shown:
- Swiss Coffee
- Revere Pewter
- Gray Owl
- Boothbay Gray
- Duxbury Gray
- Hale Navy
- Inkwell
Overall, this is a neutral palette with some pops of blue, adding a small touch of coastal to the modern traditional style.
Laundry/Mudroom
In the laundry/mudroom, I took inspiration from Studio McGee’s Cove Remodel, which you can see here. I mixed metals in this space, added a touch of contrast with a light gray cabinet and a little bit of drama with a darker floor.
Kitchen
The kitchen backsplash and countertops I continued from the laundry room as the two rooms are next to each other. I was inspired for the hood shape by Jacyln Marie Interiors, which you can see more of here. I added a few woven, natural barstool options, which give off a little bit of a coastal feel as I mentioned.
Breakfast Nook
There wasn’t much space for a “breakfast nook” so I added a small table and accent chairs to create kind of a “conversation area” that would be perfect for morning coffee! I picked roman shades for this area with a subtle pattern for some interest from The Shade Store.
Dining Room
One of the features I wanted to include in the formal dining room was trim detail! I added tongue and groove shiplap on the ceiling and wainscoting on the bottom half of the walls with wallpaper above. You can see a similar tongue and groove ceiling detail in my entryway (but stained, not painted) here.
In my designs, I often incorporate furniture that my client already has. I built this design around a rug and black side chairs that were already there! With the black side chairs, you will notice some other black accents through the remaining design boards to repeat the color for cohesion and flow.
Entryway
You’ll notice the flooring is the same throughout the whole first floor as well as the wall color (with the exception of the bedroom). I also highly recommend a stair runner on the stairs to add softness and a subtle pattern. I’m so glad we added one in our house, which you can see here!
Living Room
I added some architectural elements in this room with faux wood beams on the ceiling, trim detail around the fireplace, and a built in cabinet next to the fireplace. I loved the idea of an arched cabinet to match arched windows on the opposite wall.
Powder Room
I really love the combination of this blue vanity with the modern wallpaper and gold accents. Check out how this wallpaper looks in a more coastal design from Megan Molten here.
Home Office
The home office already had built ins but they definitely needed a fresh coat of paint! I wanted something that popped but wasn’t too dark at the same time, and I love this blue/gray color from Benjamin Moore. The furniture was already there and actually part of a prior design I did, which you can see here!
Master Bedroom
In the master bedroom, I added a board and batten accent wall behind the bed. I wanted to incorporate more blue into this room and love these oversized blue nightstands! I also picked this up in the striped curtains from Pottery Barn.
Master Bathroom
For bathrooms that are attached to the bedroom, I always recommend sticking with the same wall color as the bedroom. Paint is the easiest way to create cohesion throughout the house! I wanted this bathroom to be light and bright!
Loft
I added some more blues and darker tones in the loft space for a little bit more traditional feel. I balanced that traditional style with a more coastal coffee table and modern artwork.
Bedroom 2
In the bedrooms, I chose a really popular nice balanced gray color. I wanted to continue the blue from the loft into this room with a blue comforter and artwork. I also used these pretty blue floral prints in a living room design, which you can see here.
Bathroom 2
I used a blue vanity in this bathroom to coordinate with the blue bedding in the bedroom. Blue and gold is a combination that wins in my book every time – check out my own powder room here!
Bedroom 3
In this bedroom, I wanted to go a little bit more bold with the design, so I picked a plaid wallpaper for the entire room. A canopy bed adds another layer of interest in this room!
Bathroom 3
I wanted to add a little bit more color here, so I chose a green/gray subway tile for the shower to make it really pop! I love the way the artwork above the toilet ties into the subway tile and the vanity.
