Happy September! This seemed liked an appropriate post for September 1! I typically start decorating for fall this week (might have started a few things just a little bit early this year – check out my Instagram here to see what I’ve done so far). But, I am on a front porch kick! Make sure you check out my other recent front porch blog posts here and here.
My front porch is one of my favorite places to switch up the decor seasonally and have some fun! Keep on scrolling to see how I update my porch decor for the seasons!

Fall
Here are some ways you can update your porch decor for fall (my favorite season!):
- Switch out your wreath – I have a whole roundup of fall wreaths here. To hang my wreath on my front door, I use suction cups with hangers!
- Switch up greenery – I have a huge brown thumb so I almost never have real plants on my porch and for fall, these faux mums can’t be beat!
- Switch out pillows and add seasonal colors – if you have a place on your porch for seating and throw pillows, you can change up the pillow cover to bring in fall colors! Muted tones are perfect for this season!
- Add pumpkins – when you’re ready to add pumpkins to the mix, they are the perfect accessory for fall front porches! I love faux ones from Michaels for a budget friendly option or Pottery Barn if you want to splurge a little!
Halloween
Halloween is my husband’s favorite holiday so we definitely do it up! Here are a few ideas to add some halloween decor to your front porch:
- Skeletons – We are possibly going with a skeleton theme this year as we just picked up this 12′ skeleton from Home Depot (these are almost NEVER in stock – we got lucky! – sign up for restock notifications!)
- Add black – When in doubt for Halloween, add some black accents! I usually add in a few black pumpkins on the front porch!
Holiday
I have a bunch of holiday front porch ideas in this post! I use the basic same formula as fall to update my porch for the holidays:
- Switch out wreath
- Switch out pillows
- Add color (usually red, maybe some black!)
- Add greenery
- Also – add lighting! A twinkle is so special during Christmas, especially outside! I like to carry the lighting we put up in our yard to our front porch by adding some small pre-lit trees and/or garland around the front door.
transitioning to winter
For winter, I love to keep some of the twinkle from the holiday season. I like to use a lot of greenery as well – just remove all the red accents and leave your trees bare with lights!
Spring
Spring and summer are pretty much the same. I do like to add some patriotic touches for the summer holidays – Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day – see more on that below! Tropical plants (depending on where you live) are perfect for spring and summer. I also love to add in blues and greens for spring!
Summer
I have a whole post on adding patriotic decor with a bunch of front porch specifics! Check it out here!
The design board below is a great example of how to slowly transition from summer to fall! It’s neutral, light and bright, but incorporates a few fall tones with the wreath, layering rug, and pom pom pillow!
What is your favorite season? My spring/summer decor lasts the longest but I wish I could extend the fall and holiday season a little!
