Happy Friday, friends! I 100% intended on writing this post last year, but life happened, and I never got around to it! That’s what January is for though, right? A little catch up from the previous year? Back in the fall, I made some updates to refresh my dining room and I thought I would *finally* share those today! Keep scrolling for a little trip down memory lane and the changes I made!

Before
I’m actually going to share two before photos because this room has gone through a transformation over the last three years in terms of furniture! If you want to see where we originally started, you can check out my dining room reveal post here. (That was back in my early days of decorating and blogging so no judging!) You can check out the next “phase” of the dining room in this spring tour post. My first round of updates involved getting a larger white table and new light natural/gray wood farmhouse side chairs. This size combination and wood tone fit the whole space better.
Design Plan
Despite the furniture updates, I always kind of felt like this room was missing something. I had some ideas but none of them felt quite right (and were more major design changes). You can read what I would do differently in this room from the beginning here.
I wanted to update some of the decor to accomplish a few things:
- Make the room feel more cozy
- Add pattern/texture
- Give the room a higher-end formal dining room vibe without having “formal” furniture
Dining Room Refresh
Now you will notice that not everything from my design board made it into my final room. I made some changes and switched the positioning of some things, all of which I will discuss below! I also have everything linked at the very end for easy shopping if interested!
PS. Don’t mind the pumpkins – I photographed this room back in the fall!
- I typically start my designs with the biggest furniture and then the rug. I was keeping all the furniture we already had but you’ll see in my design board that I thought about switching out our rug. I love the look of jute and the texture our current rug has but I wanted something thinner, easier to clean, and with some more pattern. I’ve been obsessed with the Jute Harlequin Trellis rug for some time now, but ultimately I decided it wasn’t in my budget to switch!
- The next biggest item that totally transforms the look of a space is curtains! I took an Instagram poll years ago and the majority said this room didn’t need curtains but it really makes the space feel complete. I always hang my curtains as high and wide as possible – this makes your windows appear larger! We have 10′ ceilings in this room and I used 108″ long curtains here. These curtains were custom made from Etsy and they turned out great! Custom curtains can cost you a pretty penny but you can achieve a custom look for a lot cheaper by using a seamstress on Etsy! This is the shop I used!
- For wall art, I wanted to add a little bit more of a coastal feel and less farmhouse. For above my buffet, the palm shadow box from Pottery Barn that I included in my design is gorgeous and I LOVE the size but I couldn’t justify the price. Kirkland’s has a similar budget friendly option but the sizing didn’t work for me so I pivoted to this beach print! I also ended up putting the seagrass fans on a larger wall above my bar cart because the sizing just worked better there than my original design!
- For buffet decor, I wanted to streamline things and I also wanted to add some additional lighting to the room. I saw these alabaster lights somewhere and just fell in love with them. They’re great because we have them on a time so they always go on a dim setting at night which just adds the best glow to the space!
And that’s a wrap! Of course, I’m always switching up my bar cart for the season (read more about that here and here) and my table centerpiece but the rest is pretty set for now!
