Hi friends! Happy Friday! Lately, I’ve received a lot of design inquiries for living room designs incorporating leather couches that my clients already have! Leather furniture is a popular choice because it’s a family-friendly fabric that is sturdy and easy to clean. But, it can be a little intimidating to decorate around!
Below, I’m sharing three different designs that I recently completed using leather couches as well as some of my tips to create a cozy, inviting, high-end looking but still family friendly living room with these pieces!

Use a Warm Neutral Color Palette
Leather furniture typically lends itself to a warmer color palette. That doesn’t mean you can’t use certain colors, you just want to make sure the undertones work with the leather color you have! In the design below, the walls are SW Repose Gray. Gray is typically a cooler color, but Repose Gray is a nice “greige” with a good balance of warm tones, so it works! I also mixed in olive greens, creams, taupes, and just a hint of rust. You’ll notice the curtains in all three of the designs are slightly beige or off-white, because a stark white doesn’t pair as nicely with the leather.
Soften Leather Sofas
Traditionally, leather furniture is dark by nature, so layering them with lighter colors can help to tone down the darkness. In the design below, you can see I used cream and light taupe accent pillows and throw blankets. I also pulled in other light colored accents with a white lamp, cream accent chair, and light colored rug to make the room feel lighter. This helps to create contrast against the leather furniture!
Add Pretty Pillows and Decorative Accents
This might seem like a bit of a no-brainer, but decorative pillows can really take the focus off dark furniture by providing an interesting place for the eye to focus. The pillows I have shown below are most from Pottery Barn and Etsy (two of my favorite places to shop for pillow covers!). I also love Target’s pillows! I always size up one size in pillow inserts, so for example, do a 22×22 insert with a 20×20 cover (these are my go-to Amazon ones). As mentioned above, you’ll notice the pillows below consist of a warm color palette. I also mix and match patterns and solids in my pillows! I’ve created some pillow combination posts in the pasts which you can see here, here, and here. Make sure you are following me in LTK so you don’t miss any of my other inspiration posts!
I offer 4 e-design and 3 in-person design packages ranging in price from $75 to $375! All packages include full accessibility and communication with me as well as unlimited revisions!
I hope those tips help! Leather furniture has been popular for years and I don’t see it going anywhere!
