Hi friends! Today, I’m sharing an easy way to update your powder room to a classic coastal design! These updates don’t require any plumbing, structural, or trim work so they can be made by even the most hesitant DIY’er (aka me! – Although I am getting better! Currently working on custom made desks for our home office – read all about it here). The hardest thing to accomplish this look is changing out the light fixture!

Classic Coastal Design Elements
- Color Scheme: The wall color is actually Almond Cream by PPG and was already done! I stayed with this color because it was already in the foyer of this home and if you’ve seen my other designs you know I’m all about cohesion and consistent paint! It’s my #1 paint tip – read all my tips here! A great way to get the coastal look is to incorporate blues with other light neutrals. You can see the blues I incorporated in the hand towels and art prints.
- Brushed Gold Hardware: For this simple bathroom update, I kept the pedestal sink, chair rail, and all the bathroom hardware (minus the light fixture) – faucet, towel bar, toilet paper holder. Because the hardware is brass, I went with a brushed gold mirror, light fixture, and frames for the prints. Brushed gold is great for coastal design because it is a lighter looking and feeling metal (as opposed to black or antique bronze). Brushed nickel and chrome are also light but gold tends to go well with coastal color palettes!
- Add texture: Coastal design often adds interest through rattan and woven textural elements. I love the light and airy feeling of these elements. You can see how I added this texture in the woven wastebasket, tissue box cover, and rug.
- Use light-colored furniture: Coastal design is all about natural looking pieces! For this design, I suggested to paint a dark wood furniture piece with Fusion Mineral Paint in the color Sterling. If you’re wanting to know more about fusion mineral paint in this particular color, check out this article from Robyn’s Southern Nest. This helps the room feel so much lighter! Alternatively to painting a piece of current furniture, this nightstand would work as a small piece of accent furniture and is a great gray color!
- Add greenery: As I’ve mentioned, coastal design incorporates tons of natural elements! Of course, the most natural element is greenery! I try to incorporate greenery wherever possible in my coastal designs. It really is an easy way to add warmth to any space!
Do you guys love the coastal feel as much as I do? It’s not always an easy look to achieve but when done right, it’s oh so pretty!
