We have a breakfast nook right off of our kitchen which was designed to be used as an informal dining room. Currently, we are using this space as a “playroom,” although Allison isn’t really old enough to use it yet, so it’s more of a sitting room. We do also have a formal dining room which has our dining room table in it right now and we use it for holidays and family gatherings. Check out our dining room reveal here!

I think we would actually get a lot of use out of this space as an informal eating area. I usually eat breakfast at the kitchen island but lunch is kind of a free for all and then dinner we almost always end up eating on the couch. To be honest, I hate eating on the couch – and I actually eat on the floor because I spill so much that I can’t be trusted on the couch!
In this space, I would love to do a round table. I would probably lean towards one with 6 chairs but I would have to take a hard look at the dimensions before I purchased anything. We have to leave a clear walkway because you access our laundry/mudroom and garage through this room. Because of this, a rectangular table may fit better in the space. Or even a banquette! Personally, I would tape out on the floor the dimensions of different tables so that I could visualize it before buying. I love the big clock we have on the wall currently (it’s from At Home Stores), so I would most likely try to incorporate it. I would also consider changing the chandelier. I really like what we picked for the space, but we picked it for a play area, not a dining area. If we were to keep it, I think it would have to lowered. Also, this room is vaulted and we have a stained beam at the top of the ceiling.
So, although we’re not changing the room anytime soon (if Alex has his way….), I put together a design board with some inspiration for how I would like to design and decorate the space! You can shop all of these products below!
