Hi friends, Happy Thursday! I was recently working on a few design boards and mood boards and thought I would put them together to talk about how to mix modern pieces with traditional and/or antique furniture! It’s very common now to have traditional pieces of furniture that you’re not willing to part with because they are quality pieces but they can be hard to incorporate into a modern-feeling home.
I’ve done a few similar blog posts to this topic discussing honey oak furniture here, leather furniture here, and dark wood furniture here.
Keep on scrolling for some ideas how to incorporate some of your traditional/antique/vintage pieces into a cohesive modern feeling home!

Entry
In the entry, I was working with a little bit more of a bulky, wood, large cabinet with rounded angles. I also wanted to work around a vintage-style, gilded mirror above the cabinet. I added a modern but simple patterned rug. All of the cabinet/console decor is very neutral because I wanted to keep the focus on the larger pieces. However, keep in mind that scale is important in decor, so I selected a fairly large table and lamp and stems to balance out the cabinet and mirror. The chandelier brings it all together with a traditional style but done with modern lines and angles. The paint color in this mood board and also below in the dining and living rooms is SW Accessible Beige.
Powder Room
In the powder room, I worked with an oversized wood tone vanity. I love this kind of sage green color with wood tones! I recently used some similar colors in two nursery designs that you can see here. This paint color is SW Evergreen Fog. Gold also pairs very well with walnut wood tones and greens! I love how this mirror works with traditional style of the vanity and how the rug adds a really modern touch!
Dining Room
For the dining room, I worked with a traditional, antique-style buffet with hutch, crystal chandelier, and honey oak toned dining table. The biggest thing I did here was add upholstered dining chairs instead of chairs that matched the table. Traditional wood chairs in a matching set add A LOT more wood to this room. Also – these are Ruggable chairs! I have no idea Ruggable made washable chairs – I’d love to hear if you’ve tested them out!
I also added a stained tongue and groove ceiling, which ties into some of the rustic elements of the living room, which you’ll see below. Lastly, I added large sconces on either side of the hutch to fill out the wall – check out this post on my LTK for more ideas for this wall!
Living Room
In the living room, we had a little bit more of a rustic style to work with, but still a vintage, french country inspired chandelier and fireplace screen with scroll detail. I used a lot of blue accent colors here to bring some freshness into the room. The rug ties all the colors together perfectly! This room is a great example of how different styles can work together with a common color palette and tones.
