Happy Thursday, friends! Here we are for Week 2 of the One Room Challenge! If you missed last week’s blog post, I am transforming our home office for the Spring 2020 One Room Challenge! You can catch up on Week 1 and read all about the challenge here.
As I mentioned last week, we are creating a small (and I mean very small) home gym area in our office. This is what I spent last week working on! Read on below for details!
Inspiration
First, I wanted to share an inspiration picture for this space! As you can see in my design board from last week, I’m going with a modern design featuring black and white decor for the office. I saw this amazing home gym from Jenny Reimold and instantly fell in love with it!
Obviously, this space is a lot bigger than what I’m working with but I love how clean (literally and figuratively) it is! The wallpaper really brightens up the space and I love the modern lines in it!

Wall Treatment
The two biggest takeaways I have from Jenny’s gym above are the wallpaper and light fixtures. As I said last week, I am keeping our light fixtures – which are definitely more coastal than modern – but that will help the space feel a little more cohesive with the rest of our house.
I spent the majority of the last week working on the wallpaper for our gym area! I went with this peel and stick wallpaper and I am absolutely loving it! It has been a labor of love though. I had to order more because it took me a while to figure out the easiest way to line up the pattern. I definitely WOULD NOT start with this wallpaper if you haven’t done it before OR I would only do it above board and batten/wainscoting. Because we have 9 ft ceilings, I have struggled to get the pattern to match up the entire way down the wall. I figured out a solution but it involves cutting the wallpaper on the vertical lines to make matching easier!

I’m also considering adding a mirror on one of these walls, because I like having a mirror when working out. I am a little worried the space is too small and the pattern is too much for a big mirror though – we’ll see!
Storage
We already had a TV in the room which is great for watching workouts on! We were in desperate need of storage though for gym items – dumbells, push up handles, yoga blocks, foam roller, all the things! I bought this cube storage organizer and it fits the space perfectly! I was looking for something fairly narrow so it wouldn’t block our ability to open the plantation shutters on our windows!
I’m still deciding if I want to add 3 more of these gray storage bins or leave some of them open like currently pictured!
Flooring
I went back and forth on what I wanted to do about flooring in our gym area. The area measures 8′ by 6′ and I initially wanted to put a rubber gym floor like this in the entire space. However, I didn’t want to pull out the carpet and I was worried about the mats shifting on top of the carpet – plus it was expensive!
Instead, I decided to just get this large gym mat (and possibly add a second one if we get a weight bench or bike).
I also wanted to mention that I’m having trouble finding any type of gym equipment in stock these days! Even the floor mat I mentioned above apparently got lost in the mail so I had to reorder it! If you don’t have a home gym yet but are looking to add some things to start working out at home like me, it might be a while before you get actual equipment!
