Hi friends, happy Friday! Today I’m sharing a formal dining room and living room design. This is all one open room so it has to be very cohesive and also dual-purpose! I wanted to create “separate” spaces and really define the areas, even though there aren’t any walls between the two. We also used some of the client’s existing furniture so I have worked in some more traditional pieces, like an upright piano and dark wood dining table.
I created a couple other mood boards for this space, which you can see on my LTK here. This room is also in the same home as the family room design I put together last week, which you can see here!

Mood Board
I wanted this space to be a “formal dining and living room” but still comfortable for every day use. I incorporated some playful colors and patterns with the artwork and pillows. The rattan woven dining chairs gave a fun touch to the dining area, while working with the tones of the dark dining table. I repeated some of that pattern and texture with the wood and rattan hutch cabinet.
3D Rendering
In the 3D renderings I put together for this space, you can see how I used light fixtures to really define the two spaces. Lighting and area rugs are great ways to create definition in open concept rooms! You can see some of my open concept rug choices that would work with this design here.
The other big item shown in the 3D rendering that is not in the mood board is the fireplace. I always recommend taking the fireplace detail to the ceiling if you can. This really makes the fireplace a focal point in the room and look custom. The fireplace already had a very traditional mantle and moulding, so I continued that look with trim detail all the way up!
Everything is linked in the mood board above with the exception of a few items below!
Floorplan
I don’t share floorplan layouts too often in my blog posts, but I include them in almost all of my designs! This is a great visual tool for seeing how furniture will fill a room, and how spacing will be. Even with this, I do usually recommend to tape out any furniture you are thinking about buying on the floors or wall to see how it really feels in the space!
I offer 4 e-design and 3 in-person design packages ranging in price from $75 to $375! All packages include full accessibility and communication with me as well as unlimited revisions!
Do you have a formal dining and living room in your house? We have a dining room (which rarely gets used) but not a living room! You can see my dining room here.
