Hi, friends – happy Wednesday! I’m so excited for this post today! I’m sharing a very budget friendly guest bedroom makeover that I recently completed and it turned out great! My friend and I completed this makeover in one morning (excluding shopping time!). Keep on scrolling for some great before and after pictures and how we completed this transformation!

Before
We were working with a pretty blank slate which makes a makeover like this easy and fun! The plan was to keep all the furniture currently in place (bed, nightstands, chest), modern farmhouse style fan, comforter, and paint. The paint color is SW Agreeable Gray, which is a great, popular neutral color and works with so many other colors.
Design Plan
Obviously, we needed to add some decor to the room to make it feel complete, but here are the things I notice when I look at a space like this and how I planned to finish it!
- Curtains – The room needed some softness and height. It has relatively tall ceilings at 9′ and tall windows that extend 8’2″ off the ground. Curtains can completely change the feel of a room so that was my first task.
- Tree – I love to use greenery to add warmth and color to a room. Along with the curtains, I wanted to add more height in the corner of the room.
- Lamps – I wanted to add matching lamps on either side of the bed to frame the bed.
- Nightstand Decor – These are fairly large nightstands and so after the lamps were in place, I planned to fill out the decor by adding greenery and variable height decor.
- Artwork – I wanted to add a large piece of art above the bed to take up that space, especially considering the overall scale and size of this room and walls. I also wanted to add a piece of art above the chest to make the chest look taller and in proportion to the wall size.
- Bedding – Working with the comforter already there, I wanted to add a dark gray quilt and fold the comforter down to the bottom 1/3 of the bed. Creating a “luxury” bedding look is all about layers! I also wanted to add some other throw pillows to create more of a focal point.
Lastly, if we were looking to spend a little more money, I would add a rug under the bed (a 9×12 most likely) and baskets, books, or some kind of decor on the bottom shelf of the nightstands!
After!
I love how the greens and grays work with the comforter and furniture. I was also super impressed with this tree which was a steal at under $90. Scroll to the bottom of this post for whole cost breakdown of this makeover!
Often times, I love to do one large piece of art above the bed. You ideally want the artwork to be a good bit longer than tall. This piece is 47″ x 24″, which is the same dimensions as the art I have above my bed (see it here). Note this is a queen size bed and I have a king. We hung this so that the bottom of the frame was approximately 9″ above the bed frame.
For the curtains, you want to hang them as high and wide as possible. This makes your windows look as large as possible. These curtains are 108″ which is the same height as the walls, so we needed to hang the rod very close to the ceiling. There are different ways to hang curtains (for example, with rings, back tab, rock pocket) which changes where the rod should be placed, so I typically hold my curtains up on the rod to see how high the rod should be first. We hung these rods about 7.5″ above the top of the window frame and 12″ outside each side of the window frame.
