Hi friends! A couple months ago, I did a blog post on how to decorate around dark leather furniture, which you can see here. I recently got a request to design a bedroom around the existing bedroom set, so I thought I would talk about how to decorate around dark wood furniture today!
This is very common and something I love to help with – you don’t always have to start completely over to give the room a fresh and updated feel! (For example, check out this budget friendly bedroom refresh I did last year!)
Although I typically do not recommend buying entire bedroom sets, because I like to add interest with different pieces and vary the tones/colors in the room, it’s more common than not to buy an entire set and then work around that. Keep on scrolling to see some ideas on how I would decorate around this wood bedroom furniture set!

Option 1: Greige Paint
My first tip for working with dark wood furniture is to use tones (paint, bedding, pillows, artwork, curtains, etc.) that compliment the wood tone – usually warm, neutral colors. In this design, I painted the walls BM Revere Pewter – a warm gray. Revere Pewter is a very versatile color – you can see how I used it in other designs and color palettes in these posts:
- 6 Main Floor Living Design Boards
- Updating a Honey Oak Kitchen
- Modern Traditional Whole House Design
I also used warm neutral colors with some taupes and tans in the pillows, artwork above the bed, and accent chair.
PS. This whole bedroom set is currently on sale! I’m showing the black color in these designs.
Option 2: Warm White Paint
In this option, I used white paint on the walls. This is SW Alabaster, which is a very popular color because it’s subtle beige undertones are not too cool, yet not too warm. I also wanted to add a few modern touches into this design to balance out the traditional feel of the bedroom set, with the artwork above the dresser and decorative items.
Option 3: Full Room Picture Moulding
In this design, I embraced a little bit more of the traditional feel. The room I was working with already had a chair rail on the walls, so I added picture moulding to take advantage of the chair rail. Note all the decor is very neutral so as not to compete with the wall detail and the dark wood furniture!
Option 4: Wainscoting with Wallpaper
In this option, I also wanted to make use of the chair rail by doing wainscoting below the chair rail and a grasscloth wallpaper above. This design has a little deeper color palette, using olive as my accent color, which gives it a little bit more of a moody look. I love the luxe feel of the velvet curtains! I also added in more texture with woven lamps and accent chair.
I offer 4 e-design and 3 in-person design packages ranging in price from $75 to $375! All packages include full accessibility and communication with me as well as unlimited revisions!
PS. I did just put together another bedroom mood board today using only pieces that are on sale for Presidents’ Day! Make sure you follow me in LTK so you don’t miss any of my designs!
