In the fall, my mom had some work done on her laundry and powder room. She’s still putting the finishing touches on them but I wanted to show you the transformation!

Powder Room
Before:
The original powder room was fine, but it was nothing special. These pictures above are actually after my mom had painted the room (color is Sherwin Williams Fresh Idea). It had a pedestal sink and she didn’t love the style of the mirror. Even after painting it, it wasn’t quite what she had envisioned.
She planned to replace the mirror, light fixture, sink, and do some combination of wallpaper/wainscoting/shiplap on the walls.
After:
After looking at the various wall options and associated costs, she decided to wallpaper the whole room and it turned out great! The wallpaper is a beautiful coastal blue with a subtle pattern. You can find the exact paper here!
She wanted to add a little bit of interest with the vanity, so she chose a gray vanity with a faux marble top. This came as one piece. One important note on the vanity – my mom had planned to use the same faucet from her pedestal sink, but the pre-drilled holes in the countertop were different spacing, so she had to replace it.
After searching for mirrors for a while, it ended up being easiest and most budget friendly to go with something very simple and similar to the vanity.
Laundry Room
Before:
The laundry room before was the same color as the rest of the house (SW Agreeable Gray) and had a wire shelf, but no other storage. My mom has a very small bench/one locker situation for a mudroom and no coat closet, so she definitely needed the storage!
She planned to add an accent wall behind the washer/dryer, add storage with cabinets, and paint.
After:
The first step in transforming the laundry room was removing the wire shelf and then painting the room. My mom painted it in Sherwin Williams Repose Gray (one of my favorite grays, btw! See my posts on paint colors here and here). She then had the cabinets installed. She wanted one tall cabinet to hold her vacuum, swiffer, and other large cleaning products. These were pre-made cabinets, which she chose for budget reasons and is why there is a small space at the end. Pre-made cabinets generally don’t have any hardware on them, so she picked out some simple black hardware and attached them.
Next, she put up this wallpaper on one feature wall, behind the cabinets and machines. She could have wallpapered before the cabinets were installed but that would have taken extra paper for no real reason since the cabinets would hide alot of it!
Lastly, she added a wood shelf. This is just a nice piece of wood (I think 2″) from Home Depot which she stained and sealed, and then attached to the wall using black brackets (linked above).
Kitchen Backsplash
One other thing she did was replace her kitchen backsplash!
Before:
While this backsplash was pretty, it was a little overwhelming and dark for the space.
Below is an inspiration picture we used when shopping for a new backsplash. She wanted something lighter and simpler, most likely a subway tile that still had movement to it.
After:
She went with a subway tile that has a variety of white and gray shades. This tile is super popular because it can work with so many different combinations. One cool thing about this tile is that it comes in individual pieces, so if you don’t like a certain color or want to limit one of the shades, you have the flexibility to do that (as long as you order enough extra!).
One other thing to think about if you are going to add or redo a backsplash – consider where your outlets are! When the original backsplash was removed, my mom had her outlets moved closer to the corners of her kitchen so that they were hidden better. This is something I wouldn’t have even thought of and after I came home and looked at my kitchen, I definitely wish I would have considered placement more!
Here are a couple of other inspiration pictures of the tile from Bedrosians Tile & Stone!
