Last week, I shared some playroom inspiration pictures as well as my mood board [check out that post here]. To recap, I am transforming my home office into a playroom as part of the March Room Refresh Challenge hosted by Chrissy Marie Blog, Arin Solange, and Paisley and Sparrow. There are a number of reasons for the change, which you can read in last week’s post.
This week, I’m happy to report things are moving along! I took on a number of DIYs for this project [nothing major, I’m not handy in the least] and we’ve hit a few roadblocks along the way. I’ll discuss all of those things during my full reveal post next week!

Today, I’m going to share my full room design. I like to create a mood board [like the one above] to help nail down a color scheme. Once that’s done, I like to create the design using actual pictures of the space. It really helps me visualize how everything is going to look. I just recently started doing this and I wish I started sooner! Yes, it takes longer than just buying things and then seeing how they work, but I feel like it has really helped me elevate how my decor looks together. It’s also great to be able to play around with different things without having to do the actual work of buying, hanging, moving, returning, etc.
Let’s get to it!
This is the main view you see when you enter the room. This picture was taken from the doorway.
The carpet used to be in our dining room, but was too small for that space, so I decided to move it in here. Previously, I had a smaller rug in here for my office, so that was moved to the nursery. Eventually, I’d actually like to look into getting an even bigger rug [9×12, this is an 8×10] or maybe layer a jute rug underneath.
The sofa used to be in our breakfast nook, which we are actually going to finally turn into an eating area! It is a pull out which will be great for extra guests, especially since this room has doors! I also had most of the white pillows already, but love the colorful lumbar pillow [especially for spring].
I’m still playing with where exactly the chalkboard and kid’s kitchen will go and my biggest fear about the challenge right now is that the map above the couch won’t arrive in time! [It’s backordered until mid-March.]
This is the main wall you see when you enter our house, since this room is right off the entry. We wanted a TV in this room to a] keep our sanity and b] play songs and kids shows when needed especially as they get a little older! I didn’t want the focus to be the TV so I added frames we already had on either side. I actually even played around with what pictures/artwork to put in the frames in the design.
We considered putting shiplap or some type of trim design on this wall above the cabinets, but we decided it was just too much work right now and the gallery wall fills up the space nicely.
We already had this bookshelf and a few of the decor pieces that I’m planning on incorporating here. I wanted to do books on the bottom shelf for easy access. They definitely need bookends though because they will never stay upright otherwise. I also kept fun toys on the second shelf and as Allison gets taller we may need to do that on the 3rd shelf as well.
In the picture frames I am going to put pictures of Alex and myself as kids, which I thought would be fun!
This corner has stumped me for a long time, so I’m going to try a macrame wall hanging. I think it will incorporate fun, pretty, and whimsical all together – the perfect elements for a playroom!
