The March Room Refresh challenge is over! Although I’m still waiting on one more piece of art [for above the sofa], today I am revealing our new playroom! If you’ve been on this journey with me over the past few weeks, thanks for sticking around! If you’re new here, you can read my initial post on the March Room Refresh challenge here and see my design plans here.
We’ve already gotten a lot of use out of this room [way more than I got out of it when it was my office] and I really love how it turned out. I do have one more post in this series planned for next week, where I will take you through the DIYs we did in this room – the Ikea kid’s kitchen makeover, Ikea kid’s table and chairs, floating shelf, and chalkboard.
I want to take you through each area in this space and some details about each. I will be including a full source list at the end of this post as well!

Sofa/Couch
We definitely needed a place to sit in this space! This couch was originally in our breakfast nook until we figured out what to do with it and with that space. It fits perfectly here and also has a pull out mattress which will be perfect for extra guests! I incorporated some of my white pillows here to add a brightness to this space and found this great striped pillow at Target to finish it off!
I wanted to add some height and this lamp fit the bill! I’m hoping the artwork that I am waiting on adds a great accent piece too.
We already had the rug, but it used to be in our dining room. It fits this room much better! Lastly, a kid’s table and chairs makes so much more sense here than a coffee table! I love the height of this set for a small toddler!
Feature Wall
We knew we needed a TV in the space to save our sanity. This wall is HUGE so I wanted something other than the TV to fill out the space. I love how this gallery wall turned out! I wanted it to be very consistent so I used all black and white pictures from our newborn photo session with Cait Motycka Photography. I also had a vision for a floating shelf the full length of the wall back when this was my office and we finally made it happen! It looks so cool!
This wall was a huge pain because our smart panel and staircase is right behind this wall. I definitely cannot define a smart panel accurately, but basically that’s where our router and a bunch of other cables for our TV/internet service are stored. I originally wanted to center the TV right in the middle of the wall and run the wires down the wall, but of course that is exactly where the smart panel is which means we couldn’t mount the TV there and there was no way to run the wires. Luckily, there were studs on either side of the smart panel, so we were able to just shift the TV mount over slightly. With a little bit of manuevering of the TV, it basically looks centered!
Since we couldn’t run the wires in the wall, I painted a cord hider the same color as the wall [SW Repose Gray]. We had to a drill a hole in the top of the cabinet and then we covered it with a plate, which I also painted the same color as the cabinet [a custom color].
Bookshelf/Reading Corner
We’ve had this bookshelf for a while and it was in my office. We mounted it to the wall and it’s been great for books! I love that they are out in the open so Allison can easily grab them.
We also had the accent chair in my office already. The colors work perfectly and the rainbow pillow is adorable! Also, I wasn’t sure how the macrame wall hanging would work out but I love how it looks, especially for a playroom!
I also bought a fluffy floor pillow for reading and lounging. Originally, I wanted a faux fur bean bag for this corner, but I just couldn’t justify the price [Pottery Barn Kids has some super cutes ones!]. This little pillow from Target was right on budget and so cute!
Play Corner: Kitchen + Chalkboard
I love how this corner turned out! It’s going to be great for playing as Allison gets older. I debated getting a more expensive kid’s kitchen but with a little bit of work, this Ikea one is perfect!
The chalkboard is going to be SO FUN as she grows up. I literally cannot wait for her to draw all over this thing [and hopefully nothing else lol]. I did get dustless chalk and also chalk holders which are going to be a lifesaver! I honestly had no idea such things existed until I started researching this whole process. Also, the little rainbow cup in her kitchen is a perfect chalk holder!
Storage + Organization
For storage, we already had these built in cabinets as part of my office. I put storage cubes that we already had in the middle three cabinets to organize smaller toys. Larger toys that wouldn’t fit in the cubes are going on the top shelf for now. Since we only have 1 child, who is still relatively young, we don’t have all that many toys [and hoping to keep it that way!].
I also put labels on the storage cubes by using twine and kraft name tags. I just glued three of them together to give it a little bit of thickness. These are the categories I used: blocks, vehicles, music, electronics, balls, teethers/rattles. We’ll see how long they last!
