Hi friends! You may have seen my Instagram post last month with a few bedroom designs that weren’t necessarily in my typical modern coastal farmhouse style! (If not, check it out here!). Well, I’m back today with some more designs in that same style – a little mid-century modern meets scandinavian meets wabi sabi. I had a design request from a client for several rooms in this style, so I thought I would share a few of the design boards I’ve put togther.
Truth be told, I’d never heard of the wabi sabi style until I started working on these designs! It’s been so fun to explore a new style and put together design ideas! My client shared a few articles on the style that I will also share here:

Primary Bedroom
As you’ll notice in all these designs, they have a number of elements to create the wabi sabi style:
- A neutral, muted color palette. The walls are all a white or cream (more on the office wall treatment below) and the bedding is all beiges, creams, or taupes.
- Curved, organic lines. Not too many hard edges on the furniture here! I rounded up more curved dressers and nightstands here!
- Texture. Sherpa fabric on the furniture, dimensional wall art, and woven shades for warmth,
- Imperfect ceramics for decor
- Natural greenery
Home Office
In the home office, we also incorporated a dedicated yoga/meditation space. These types of dual purpose rooms have been very popular since the pandemic and I have designed several home office and gym combos, which you can see here:
I put together some smaller mid-century modern desk options which fit this design style as well here.
The biggest design item I suggested for the office was the addition of either a limewash or roman clay wall treatment. I love the natural, neutral, and organic look of these walls and think it fits so well with the wabi sabi style! The coloring on these roman clay walls from “For the Home” is to die for!
Guest Bedroom
Lastly, I put together some small guest bedroom designs. In these designs, I featured some modern blue artwork, which is really the only deep, rich color in all the design boards! The light wood tones in this room really have my heart.
I did notice myself gravitating to a few stores to achieve the wabi sabi look: West Elm, Crate & Barrel, CB2, Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, and Etsy.
