Happy Friday! Here’s to another round of furnishing friday’s featuring a modern bonus room design! This design is for my own house! We have a large bonus/media room on our second floor that I never really got around to decorating. Well, after 2+ years in our home, I am ready to tackle this space!
We recently got a new sectional for our downstairs living room (this one – love it so far!), so we played a little switcharoo and moved our previous one upstairs. The layout and fit is SO much better in the bonus room. Below are two options for the decor in this space using the sectional, rug, and chair that we already have!
I am planning to do a board and batten accent wall (might be a little down in the line) in a dark, moody color. Eventually, I’d also love to transform the closet in this space into a little bar area!

Option 1
For the first option, I used black and white as my accent colors. I chose a modern faux concrete media cabinet for below our TV and used the coffee table we currently have in our living room! I don’t love it in our living room so I’m considering moving it to this space anyways!
For wall decor, I incorporated some of the Steelers decor I already have (yes, I am from Pittsburgh! Black and gold runs DEEP here.). You’ll see in option 2 I used yellow/gold as an accent color to tie these in too!
Option 2
For option 2, I incorporated more creams than white. I also added some leather accents with a large ottoman as the coffee table.
In addition to my Steelers decor, we have a TON of Star Wars decor and this seems like a great space for it. I took over my husband’s office when we converted my office to playroom (read about that here) and the Star Wars items have been homeless since.
One of my biggest struggles in putting together this design was finding a media cabinet to go below our 70″ TV. There are a lot of options for smaller TVs, but I couldn’t find a lot I loved for over 70″. I think your media cabinet should definitely be a little bit longer than your TV. I found a good amount that were about the same length but I wanted something with a couple extra inches. Below are some TV stands I found during my search that I liked by size!
Final Plans
After looking through the designs I put together, I made a more “final” mood board. I basically ended up combining the two designs! I went with the cream curtains and pillow combo, but the faux concrete media cabinet.
The room is currently pained SW Repose Gray and we added an accent wall behind the TV in SW Gauntlet Gray.
We also currently have a daybed and ladder bookcases which I am planning to keep. I am going to add Beddy’s bedding to the daybed because it’s so convenient! After we started to lay out the room, we noticed we have a kind of awkward corner behind the sectional and I can’t stop thinking how fun it would be to put a popcorn machine there! Perfect for movie nights!
I hope this gave you some inspo for a modern bonus or media room! I can’t wait to finish this room up!
