Happy Friday! I recently put together a design for a dual home office and gym that I wanted to share today! This was a very timely design request as I am doing something very similar in my own home office for the 2020 One Room Challenge. You can read my latest One Room Challenge update here (or take a look back at prior updates here and here)!
Items to Incorporate to a Home Office and Gym
The first place I started with this design was the layout of the room (basically a square at 12.5′ x 13.5′) and items that my client wanted to incorporate! They needed the following:
- Storage for books and files. The desk I selected would need to have a file cabinet or a way to incorporate a file cabinet!
- Large desktop / work space
- Space for a Peloton
- Space for a second exercise mat for yoga
- 32″ TV to watch workouts
- Mirror
- White board to track workouts
- Medal hanger
- Storage for yoga mats and workout gear
Home Gym Inspiration
I personally don’t think there is a ton of great inspiration out there about how to combine a workout area into a home gym in a stylish way! However, I LOVE the look of this space below – the Peloton just fits perfectly into the storage on the wall. I think the use of plants really elevates this space and it’s something I try to incorporate into all of my designs!
Neutral Color Palette
I’ve mentioned before that I usually start a design with the color palette. For this room, once I had an idea of how I could lay out the room to incorporate the items above, I turned to color palette.

I always want my designs to fit into the rest of the rooms in a client’s house. The best way to create cohesion, in my opinion, is through paint. I have more detail on this in my post on picking paint colors! In this design, the clients have SW Mindful Gray on their kitchen walls right outside the office. Because of that, I chose to go with SW Repose Gray for the walls in this room. Repose Gray is one shade lighter than Mindful Gray [and one of my favorite paint colors – it’s in a ton of rooms in my house]! They also have SW Softened Green on their kitchen island so I made sure to put this in my color palette to make sure it wouldn’t clash with any of the decor I selected.
I love the idea of an accent wall in an office – or really any enclosed room. It adds a ton of interest and allows you to use less decor because it takes up visual space. For this room, I thought a shiplap wallpaper would add a coastal farmhouse vibe to balance out the modern feel of the workout equipment.
Below are two layout options I came up with for this space! They incorporate basically the same pieces and decor – other than a different desk!
Option 1 | A Long Desk
Option 2 | A Corner Desk
Which option would you go with? Let me know in a comment below!
