Happy Friday! Today I’m sharing things I want to add to our house – at some point! We moved in almost 6 months ago and you would think there wouldn’t be any projects since we custom built our house right? Nope! There will probably always be little changes I want to make here and there. (Don’t tell Alex!)
It takes some time living in a space to see how it really functions. Since we haven’t lived here all that long yet, these aren’t major projects. Just adding feature walls here and there and different decor in certain places.
Below, I’m sharing some small tweaks that hopefully we will tackle over the next few months and then some possible larger changes that might happen over the next few years.

Decorate entryway // Our entryway is really open because we have an “opening” or large doorway to rooms on either side as soon as you enter the house – one for the dining room and one for my office. There’s really nowhere to put a console table or any type of entryway decor. However, the walls flanking my office are pretty symmetrical so I have been wondering since we moved in if I should do some type of artwork on either side. Personally, that feels like too much and maybe too formal looking for me. So instead, I’m considering doing one shelf with decor on the right side of the office doors.
Add chair corner in master bedroom // Is the master bedroom always the last room to be decorated? Sure feels that way! We never finished our master in our last house and this one is shaping up to be the same! I haven’t finished the decor on our dressers and the corner above is big and empty! I have big plans for a light colored chair and blanket and some artwork above it!
Create landing area at top of stairs // We have a fairly large landing at the top of our stairs that leads to all of the bedrooms and media room. I’m planning on putting some type of chest or dresser here with artwork above. But, I want the dresser to be a laundry hamper for kids (at least Allison!) to put clothes into since our laundry room is on the first floor. I haven’t found the right hamper that looks like a piece of furniture yet, so I’m wondering if I’m going to have to DIY it. I’m also considering whether or not I should add a rug to this area!
Feature wall in office // I have BIG plans for this wall! First of all, it is HUGE and needs something large to fill up the space. Originally I wanted bookshelves here, but they were super expensive, and probably too complicated for us not-really-handy people to do ourselves. Then, I considered floating shelves, but they need to be pretty big, and I would need so much decor to fill them up (same with the bookshelves!). So, my current plan involves some sort of board and batten wall, possibly in a chevron pattern, with one long floating shelf. I think the board and batten idea will fill up the space well!
Feature wall in water closet // Water closets are usually SO boring. They’re really practical but a small room with just a toilet is kind of sad. Our master bathroom is a little more “glam” than the rest of our house – I didn’t necessarily plan that – so I am considering doing some sort of mirror or tile feature wall in our water closet. I’ve seen some antique mirror subway tiles or peel and stick paper that I think could look really cool!
Wallpaper or tile laundry room wall // I considered adding a backsplash to our laundry room when we were building, but it just wasn’t in the budget. We added a hanging rod which has been very useful, but it leaves a big empty wall when there isn’t anything on the rod. I could add some type of decor here, but since it does get covered occasionally, I like the idea of wallpaper or shiplap or tile here instead. I’ve seen a lot of really pretty wallpaper in laundry rooms lately and even though I don’t love wallpaper, I think the laundry room would be a good place to get my toes wet!
Turn “sitting room” into a breakfast nook // This is probably one of my bigger projects that will definitely take time. When we built the house, the plans had a breakfast nook right off the kitchen. At this point, we don’t really need a breakfast nook and a dining room – plus we also have seating at our kitchen island. Instead, we planned to use this room as a playroom (more like play area since it is entirely open to the rest of the house). Right now, it’s just a sitting room since Allison isn’t really big enough to need a playroom yet. After living in the house for almost 6 months, I think we would actually use the breakfast nook a lot more! I love the idea of having a table for meals and our dining room is less convenient than this would be. We always planned on transforming the space into a breakfast nook someday, but I think that day might come sooner than later!
